Home Energy sticking to opening "industry read" (double charged units?)

On or by your meter there will be a label stating when it was installed and the initial reading (which in most cases would be zero). Take a photo because you will need to present that to the Ombudsman as evidence. Be aware that the Ombudsman does not investigate; they read what you wrote and what your supplier wrote and come to a decision based on that.

For 'will' read 'may'. Six months after my meter exchange, I had cause to open the box. This is what I found:

What was left of the label after small animals had eaten their fill can be spotted behind the horizontal cables. It used to be attached to the backboard by the screw near the top of the backboard. Nothing of what the engineer had written had survived.
Moral: take that photo sooner rather than later.

@Ildhund, you know someone could establish your address from that photo?

Does the Energy Ombudsman have access to the national meter database?

Yes they do. In my case they say they have reviewed the national database.

That should be a slam-dunk case for the OP then, given what we know.

I'll make a £10 donation to my local British Legion branch poppy appeal if you send me a DM containing my address and details of how you found it from the photo of my meter 🙂

@Ildhund - You need to contact your DNO and get them to look at the service head (that big block with the 100A fuse holder). It should not be floating around inside the box like that.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

It looks like it's screwed to its own bit of chipboard, which is in turn screwed to the main backboard.
A bit weird but presumably the DNO fitter was happy enough to install it like that?
