Lost cheques, cheques that won't scan in phone apps, problems paying them into a branch etc, plus forgeries, delays in getting the money….
FP with a name/n ID match are paid instantly and can be confirmed e.g. for a tradesman or between people
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

And first deposits for new savings accounts with some of the building societies.
One of the other advantages is the money isn't debited from your account without the recipient taking positive action (discounting fraud by a third-party) so if you are dealing with someone who is slack with their banking and/or untrustworthy then a cheque means they only get paid if they pay the cheque in and the onus is on them to follow up if there is a problem with the payment - whereas the onus is on the sender of a BACS/FP payment to sort things out if the payment (allegedly) doesn't arrive.

They are eg for paying £100000 into your new savings account
Also for eg paying for something online where you are not entirely comfortable with them having your credit card details
Also eg for paying someone.where you don't want to make a bank transfer to them
There are other examples but I am sure you can think.of a few

Credit cards are better for online transactions as you get the section 75 protection. If it's less than £100. You can also use something like a virtual debit card or PayPal if you are worried about giving your card details.
