Tesco Bank Credit Card asking for more information
I applied for a Tesco Bank credit card to move some debt. However, they only said we may lend you this amount and we'll let you know in a few days. I found this odd as they already ran a credit check and that's usually enough.
They messaged back 2 days later and requested bank statements, payslips, or a P60 dated within the last 3 months (the latter is obviously not possible in March but anyway).
I'm not doing that so i just want to forget about this application and i'll move to debt to an existing card that I have without all the hassle and my concern about sending personal documents.
My question is: what's the best way to tell Tesco Bank that i'm no longer interested in this card if it means handing over my payslips? By just ignoring the request for more information does it somehow show up as denied credit when they close my application?

Just contact them & tell them you no longer wish to continue.
Clearly they are doing affordability checks & want to confirm that the info you supplied is correct. Which is quite normal.
Credit check is as much to confirm you are who you say you are.

Ok, thank you. I'll call them and say I've found borrowing elsewhere while i was waiting. This is true.
I've never been asked for payslips for a credit card application before and past applications have always been an instant yes/no, so waiting days for a decision and then being asked for personal evidence is new and unusual from my lived experience.
Safe to say I won't bother with Tesco again for borrowing services. Not had this trouble with proper banks before.

Banks (both the ones like Tesco and "proper" banks) are taking greater care over their checks re affordability before extending credit. They'll take the hit on losing a few good risks (such as the OP) rather than getting referred to the Ombudsman by a defaulting creditor pleading unaffordability and irresponsible lending.

Payslips are reasonable, it should be mandatory really that claimed income is evidenced. I don't see how it would reveal anything you've not already disclosed. I wouldn't supply bank statements for unsecured lending though.

This has been normal for a long time. I opened a Barclaycard Rewards credit card over five years ago, and had to provide proof of income.

I was 100% pre-approved for a Virgin BT card, that went through the credit check fine, went for referral and a week later declined, it's one of those things, it happens. I got a different card a few months later without issue. Them wanting proof of your income is not unusual, there might be an error somewhere e.g. you applied for a card and said you had X income, then this one you said you had Y due to a change in circumstances (promotion, bonus etc) and they just want to be sure they are doing affordable lending
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The only CC I've been declined from is the Tesco one, the day I got declined I opened both HSBC & MBNA ones.

They'd have issues stating unaffordability or irresponsible lending on the back of a fraudulent credit application.

Not really - most information is available electronically. Manual checks are an exceptions process.
The only credit facility that I've provided proof for was a mortgage and that was the latest payslip only.

You can call up and cancel the application or simply let the application expire (usually about 30 days)
You'll just be left with credit checks that will drop off.
