There is a small independent bakers in the local village which only takes cash. I'm not sure that the cost of banking cash will be that much in their circumstances as they will be recirculating it within the economy without passing through a bank's hands, which will naturally take their cut each time.

Not a hundred yards away is a pub I occasionally go to to watch the football. Recently the landlord served me and said, would I be having more than one pint (er… yes!) and could I pay in one transaction due to the charge the card provider made on each one. I told him I always pay cash for drinks out, so he said no problem then and I paid for my beers separately. [The number may vary according to the match and my stress/celebratory levels..].

A comment on my emboldening? That's just a petty correction of a typo.

More generally? Other than businesses who operate in a retail environment (not too many BtoB transactions are in cash) and their customers I'm not sure who else there is who can make a choice.

I can imagine it would be challenging to pay the premium to insure your house, car or travel in readies.

Think that most local authorities will allow individuals to pay cash for tax & fees, not sure if it's possible to pay central taxation in the same way?

Possibly. Though I believe (happy to be corrected) that there's a wee charge to them every time someone pays via their card reader. Whatever the reason, they produce jolly splendid tucker!

Some older card contracts charge a minimum fee, 10-20p usually, so I guess he must have been on one of those, most modern card contracts are 0.8-1.8% for in person transactions, depending on the volume. Large retailers will be paying less than that.
