I agree, their business, their choice, but they should realise that there are some people who feel easier using cash rather than cards. While cards are useful, cash has its place.

You know where you are with cash - if it's not in your pocket, you are unable to spend. A useful budgeting tool. With a contactless card, you can zap away buying items you may think you want, only realising the cost when checking your bank statement.

I disaree with the knowing where you are with cash. I rarely use it now, but previously I could take out say £40 and then a few days later have £5 left and be wondering where it all went, mentally thinking back where I spent money and not being able to remember, then thinking I lost or misplaced it.

Whereas with card, I can check online banking and instantly see where I spent it and don't need to worry about misplacing the cash.

Quite recently we were setting up an ISA and they insisted on seeing a cheque to verify our bank account. Thankfully, we still had a half used cheque book. Don't know what we'd have done otherwise- I bet most of the frontline bank support staff wouldn't know what a cheque is. It's almost as archaic as a party line telephone now!

It's actually easier to pay by well-scan cheques into most apps, and the last time I was sent a cheque was for shares I sold off from a bank.

Cash I will always Carry as a backup. I think you lose your privacy when cash is gone; you won't find a digital note blowing down the street either. And digital can be turned off as we all know.

Cash also provides resilience. Card systems fail, terminals go down, banks have outages, and internet connections drop. Cash still works when the tech doesn’t.

If you ignore the other side of scenarios, sure. What about cash can get damaged, stolen, lost. Your bank will still have the money. Tech still works when cash doesn't.

I go for the belt and braces approach.

I carry a credit card, I have another card in my Iphone wallet and I have cash ( notes and change).

I prefer using a card/google wallet these days. I do carry some cash just in case. One suspects that the Turkish Barbers, Taxi Drivers and local Chinese takeaway prefer cash or only take cash for some possible reason other than their natural dislike of machines & cards. Inevitable there will be some diehards who won't let a system go. Probably still some who regret the days of paying for things via barter or using shells has mostly disappeared.

Our local Chinese takeaway was cash only until Covid, when less people carried cash (remember when it was believed coins and notes might be carrying the virus?)

They take cards now but I know they prefer to be paid in cash because of the overheads so we still do.
