If you have pre-existing conditions then you need a policy that will cover them, there are companies that specialise in offering this at reasonable (ish) rates.
Otherwise it’s just a question of if they cover your age.

it is important you read the questions very carefully and answer accurately.
if you have been to the doctor about something within whatever time frame they ask about, you need to mention it even if it seems insignificant.
in most cases it won’t make any difference at all, but what you don’t want is something to happen on holiday and for them to track it back as a potentially connected illness which they weren’t aware of.

First make a list of details, where you're going, how long and what you'll be doing.
Then any medical issues, pills taken. Date last seen doctor, physio anything related because you may have to repeat several times.
Check what you can on a comparison site then telephone three companies you have heard of for an idea of price. Go over it again. They often ask questions that aren't on comparison sites.
Anything you plan to do like safaris, sand boarding, snorkeling need extra cover but may be included. Ask for the details to be sent to you and read them. Look for anything missing.
I used to travel with cheap pretty jewellery, old phone and basic camera. Nothing I couldn't afford to loose. Ditto clothes. Goods away from home were covered by home insurance which sometimes helps with prices.
The most important thing is medical cover and repatriation. Go for the highest cover.
If you need medical care abroad do you want anyone to come over. If that's important see how much extra that is. Last minute flights and hotels are expensive but it may be cheaper to cover that yourself if you can.

What happens with travel insurance in unexpected situations such as conflict (or you remember a few years ago that volcano completely stopping travel) depends on a number of factors.
It may cover if you have already booked your travel and insurance because the foreign office advises against travel to a location but if the foreign office are not advising that you don’t travel but you decide not to go anyway that’s a change of mind and wouldn’t be covered.
travel insurance does not usually cover acts of war or terror that happen while away. It varies with regards to acts of God or natural disasters and you would need to check specific policies for that.
Because the conflict is already happening, you may find that if you don’t already have insurance, you are not covered for the current troubles for any insurance now taken out. This is why the advice is to book insurance at the time you made your travel arrangements.

Look at All Clear and Staysure as options, although my 80+ year old family member uses the Nat West Bank packaged policy - I'm sure other banks offer similar.

packaged bank accounts tend to have an upper age limit of between 70 and 80 depending on the bank. And will also have similar exclusions ref acts of god etc.
Nat west charges an age premium over 70 and can refuse to cover if health changes.
