Why is my gas hob so hot?

All down to the output of the burners. Lowest on a gas hob has a max output of around 1kw, which at low setting could be 250-500w output. This is about as low as you will ever need.

I don't think I ever had a gas hob with seams. They were always either enamel or stainless steel, in one piece. It's the burners and pan supports that get in the way and make it harder to clean, compared to an induction or ceramic electric hob where all you have is a smooth sheet of glass to wipe (or in extremis, scrape) clean.

I haven't had a Kenwood before. My previous gas cooker was a Cannon, as was my mother's, and I could cook on both of them with no problem. The gas boiler's only just been serviced so I'd have to call someone out specially. Here they all are on minimum…

I would say that my minimums - an Indesit cooker - are lower than that. But that's not to say that your hob is 'wrong'.
I haven't heard of these diffusers, but it sounds a good solution, and then you can ask your GS next year. Or, ask Kenwood about this, tho' I suspect they'll say it's within parameters or summat…

This is probably some sort of safety precaution that all gas cookers have now due to low flames getting blown out. The irony is that I chose gas because it's more responsive and basically this diffuser thing will make it as slow as an electric. I'm exhausted with spending hours choosing expensive things and then finding they're not what I thought.

I just did an unscientific check comparing your photo with my Neff gas hob.
The settings on mine go from 1 to 9.
I would say what yours looks like on the lowest setting is approx equivalent to mine on a 3. For sure if I turn mine down to 1 , it is definitely lower / weak. It is about 5 years old

Just realized my Beko gas hobs can get lower than the sapindus picture. Only just worked it out reading this. The low setting on mine is by turning it all the way anticlockwise to the little flame symbol. Have to keep taking off pan top of say boling egg in water. But turning it clockwise from the low flame symbol takes the flame down to tiny flame. Yes it's probly safety issue to not use it that way , but is there to use.

Yes, last night I also resorted to the forbidden territory to the left of the MAX setting. I think I can even remember a dim and distant past when that's how gas hobs worked, before they went to the safer arrangement where MIN is in a sort of cul-de-sac of adjustability. The instruction book explicitly states not to do this. Although the cooker does have a safety cut-off and will cut the gas if there is no flame.
However, someone else mentioned a gas flow adjustment screw. I found a US video where the guy pulls the knob off and the screw is in the middle of the spindle. No such luck here. But with a bright torch on a second foray I have spotted it, to the side and at the back of the spindle. This is also probably forbidden to tinker with.

On mine, the pan supports just lift off, as will the burners, and it's easy to clean. On my previous cooker years ago I specially chose one with four pan supports so they would fit in the sink to clean them, but I couldn't find one this time.

And hopefully my final comment on this, but I still much prefer gas if only for the simple reason of having a naked flame available for doing things like heating a skewer to melt holes in plastic things!
