Difficulty insuring my mother’s cottage now she is in a home

I need some urgent help please. I went to reinsure my mother’s building insurance with the AA. I explained she was now in a home but a family member lived in her home for two weeks every month. They said they would treat this as unoccupied and couldn’t insure it.
Checking out other insurance sites they all assume it is your own home and there is no option for insuring someone else’s even though I have POA? Same applies to all comparison sites

Contacted BIBA but they will only proceed if I give a quote on a rebuild value. This is a period stone 2 bed terraced cottage with Stonesfield slate roof with a value of £500,000. I have no idea how to calculate the rebuild value?

I only have a few days grace to do this, all while suffering from pneumonia so any help getting this insured welcomed! TIA

For that sort of arrangement landlords insurence would be more appropriate. Speak to a broker.

Try someone like Endsleigh or LV for landlord insurance

You should be competing the forms in your mother's name, insuring her own property. You're probably causing confusion if you're trying to insure in your own name.

You can calculate rebuild cost here: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/home-insurance/calculating-rebuild-costs/

If the property is not being rented out then please can I query why landlord’s insurance would be the right type of policy please? (Insuremy suggested holiday home insurance?)

Also why is it impossible to buy insurance for someone else’s property as all online forms assume it is your primary residence . There are no options to insure as POA.

Thanks, understood. But even if I do there is no way of explaining she won’t be living there but a family member will be for 2 weeks every month. I talked toLV but they call this status unoccupied and don’t deal with that.

Because the part time resident is not the owner. Is there any reason you are not selling?

We are about to sell. I just need the build insured until it does sell. Thanks

Try Adrian Flux, they offer unoccupied home insurance and I've used them

Imsued HomeProtect to insure my Dad’s house whilst it sold. It was unoccupied apart from the odd week.
