It's not that you're being held responsible, it's that there may be a gap in consumer rights here, because you didn't purchase the update from anyone and I presume the updates aren't compulsory. I doubt you even paid for the app. I'm trying to think of an analogy from the days before software updates on home electricals.

Let's say I bought a Philips HiFi from Rumbelows in the 1990s and three years later, Philips offered me a free product that allowed me to tweak the electronics in the unit to change the sound somehow. I elect to be sent the product (let's say it's a screwdriver and a small instruction manual), apply the tweak and my HiFi stops working, who is responsible? I can't see that Rumbelows is. Is Philips, given that I didn't pay for the "upgrade" and it wasn't forced on me?

Are the firmware updates mandatory? I appreciate they're probably recommended, but what would have happened if you didn't apply that update? After a couple of bad experiences I disable all automatic updates on things like phones, smartwatches, TVs, etc. until I've checked online a few weeks later to see if there have been problems.

Amazon's quite a bit different from an auction house or some website like Autotrader and even Ebay is in a grey area.
