Shop bought or homemade weed killer

We've used salt which is quick and effective, and cheap. But they always come back. We've also used branded weedkiller which worked the same but cost 30 quid. The best solution for minimal work is to keep on top of them and treat them as soon as they appear. Then you only have to do little and often and are not faced with a huge whack of weeds all at once.
Glyphosate is better at killing the entire plant and roots, but it depends what the weed is. Some are more hardy than others

There are unintended consequences when you use salt. Salt damages concrete and may permanently sterilising soil, making it inhospitable to all plants, not just weeds. Don't use it. (One really bad winter - ?? 2010 - we made the mistake of salting our front path with dishwasher salt, because it was sheet ice. The salt destroyed the mortar holding a bricked area together and ate into the surface of the concrete slabs.)
For a cheap weedkiller, pour a kettleful of boiling water over the weeds. For a more permanent solution, you may want to burn them using a weed-killer-wand.

As you say, it’s a contact herbicide and burns the foliage in the same way as vinegar would. It will kill many weed but won’t finish off dandelions, which will soon be back.
Depends what type of weeds are causing the problem.
OP - glyphosate is very effective on all weeds and ideal for paths. As someone has already pointed out, you can’t rely on the brand name to tell you what’s in the bottle. Check the active ingredient list.

Something else you can do is to kill off the weeds you don't like and then seed a plant or plants you do want growing there really thickly so that it's difficult for any other seeds to establish themselves. I've seen that done very effectively with low growing thymes or alyssum for example.

Don't buy ready to use weedkiller as you are paying for water. Buy the concentrated liquid and dilute following the instructions

Use a blowtorch wand. Cheap to buy and gets rid of the weeds and any seeds that might be about to germinate.

I use a glyphosate concentrate weedkiller which I mix with water and use a hand pump / pressurised sprayer. In time, the glyphosate goes to the roots of the weed and kills it completely. Takes a little while to see the results..

i have approx 60 foot by 10 foot of block paving from my front door to my front walls
i have a concrete driveway from road to my garage so no weeds there
i also have a dog that plays in front garden when i am out there so no weedkiller
i simply use a 4 foot crow bar to take up any moss /weeds / dont worry about the tiny ones
sweep up
then
bottles of 35p white vinegar from lidl put a bit of salt in them and the lidl ones have a small opening in the top which acts as a squirter and directing it on the right bit of ground is very accurate
3 bottles is enough for mine
as long as it does not rain in next 2 days any remaining green will go yellow and turn to dust in a few days
i then put paving sand down and brush in
lasts about a month before repeat
i do the roadside kerb weeds with my mattock takes 60 secs to do

I encourage erigeron daisies to self seed in the block paving cracks. Once they get going they seem to out perform all the "weeds" and they look pretty and flower for about 9 or 10 months of the year. They are easy to pull up if they get a bit much too.
