An XC60 or even XC90 is on my radar but can't bring myself to part with that kind of cash for a motor. The XC90's I would go for are at least £55k. I'll probably go for an XC40 at £30-35k, never had a Volvo before and at that time of life! Either that or a Tiguan as a big fan of VW's through positive experience.

I love my workhorse Disco, 13 yrs on from buying at age 9 months, but I just won't be able to justify the cost of replacing it with like. I will run it till it dies - hopefully not for some years to come. Hopefully it will run well into retirement so we have a clearer idea of what we need going forward

One ( slightly depressing) thing to keep in mind as you get older.

Although personally I am not a fan of SUVs, they are easier to get in and out of than a saloon/estate/hatchback.

Insurance creeps up too. Mine is £200 per year, my dad (who has the same car) is 32 years my senior and pays £1,400. It's like being 17 again!

We have a VW T Cross SUV (Polo on steroids). Still a small car, but much easier to get in and out of - and the higher driving position is better for short*rses like me.

I wonder at what age it starts to increase?

Maybe around 75? although different insurers will take a different view. Has your Dad shopped around, MSE style ?

Currently running a Superb L&K bought new with 25% discount and would cost nearly 45k to replace so currently sat @90k miles and as good as gold.

It's a beast of burden and with a massive boot suitably lined with old quilts and tarps can transport enormous loads to the tip.

My second means of transport is a Triumph, very little space, no storage, not particularly fuel efficient but it does make me grin😜

I might have to put a replacement in the spread sheet, on the basis of gifting from income and taking a pattern over one year with the next I think I can squeeze a new one in😎

I have recently bought a car with all the modern gizmos. For motorway driving it really does more or less drive itself, which makes it far easier. Yesterday I drove nearly 350 miles, which I’d never have attempted with the old car.

The new car is an EV, which means that long drives need some planning.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • My next door neighbour’s costs about the same. Given how little he drives it that’s probably £1 a mile just in insurance!!!

I retired in December and handed back an EV company car which with low BIK. With an EV tariff fuel costs were under 2p a mile so we are missing the low running costs.

My wife will probably retire in the next 1 to 2 years so we will address the retirement cars at that point.

We have my wife's 10 year old BMW and I've pressed my 20 year old Landrover back into service. Although I'm cursing the rate we go through diesel both have loads more character than the EV.

A hybrid with a good 50-60 mile electric range is a likely future candidate.
