The bus station dudes are now scratching their heads ;-)

He is also a bus enthusiast, more so than trains I would say. He doesn't have the same passion against the phrase bus station as he does train station. Presumably if you follwed the same logic you would say road station rather then bus station and that would just be daft.

Presumably the Australian roadhouse would also trouble your friend?

We decided we needed to keep two cars but they don't both need to be four wheel drive. So we replaced a basically end of life Freelander with a 12 year old Ford Focus. Over 60mpg and £20/year road tax. I can't imagine ever wanting to lease, but some of the zero % deals might be attractive if we really wanted new.

Cars in the UK are far more expensive than in the USA! I can get a Hybrid Honda Civic for $25k and the equivalent Honda in the UK is £32k, so almost twice the price. I've been looking at what to buy if/when I move back to the UK and a certified car with a few thousand miles on the clock can save you a lot of money. I think I'd look for something from a Honda dealer with 10k to 20k miles.
And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.0 -
We went down to one car when we retired - a few years in, and we've never needed two cars.
We aren't ones for flash holidays, but we do like the luxury of a brand new car every five years. It's being able to chose the exact model/colour/extras that we want, and the knowledge that no-one has smoked or thrown up in it.
Buying every 5 years means that we have a good trade in value against the new car. Plus, when we bought last year, we took out a PCP contract which gave us an extra £1,600 discount - then paid it off in full within the cooling off period. Cash, of course - we aren't gamblers, and our ISA interest rate was less than the cost of finance.

Prices of cars in different European countries can be significantly different, so not just a USA - U.K. thing.

Whatever you do if you and your partner want to keep their own NCB then having only one car you will need to alternate who insures it year on year.
Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Yes, I was very surprised at UK car prices, OMG. But it's all "swings and roundabouts" as many things are less expensive in the UK….just not cars and petrol.
