I agree that it sounds like media hype. I can't believe there's enough mercury in the bulbs to do any harm to the a person who isn't involved in their manufacture (and that's probably done by machine anyway).

I must have misheard about the using of a vacuum cleaner to clear up debris, but remember thinking that I wouldn't use mine to clear up broken glass in any circumstances. I do get tired of all this knee-jerk reporting to alleged dangers.

Today's news is a link between these bulbs and skin problems including cancer.

This was raised during the programme in the morning, both experts, including the one going on about mercury, denied there was any link to cancer

The skin problems were related to the extremely rare & few people who are allergic to ultra violet, and as was pointed out during the programme, the biggest source of ultra violet light is of course the sun, and thus daylight is a problem to these few

The low energy bulbs are similar to florescent tubes. I know my council have a separate place at the local tip for them but I wasnt aware that they had provisions for low energy bulbs although I have heard this story a few days back

So now there is a proper place to dipose of light bulbs, another for batteries, another for textiles, another for thick card, another for hardcore, another for garden clippings, another for fridges, another for biscuit tins (can't be recycled with cans) Where is this taking us? Even little old ladies will need a 4x4 to dispose of household rubbish. I drove to our local tip, asked the nice man where to put a nearly empty can of flea treatment for carpets and was told I would have to drive to one of two nearby towns, a round trip of 22 or 30 miles, as the orange square with the black cross on the tin meant he couldn't accept it. Nor should I put it in with the household waste. Yet they accept bleach bottles in the plastics recycling.

I can't get rid of obsolete computers from the office - I'm afraid even to give away my old computer to family because I can't completely erase the hard disk. No wonder the 'Simplifying Life' thread on MSE is red hot. Bring back the rag and bone man!

BTW did you know that someone in Wales was fined £200 for putting an envelope in his household plastics collection? It spoils the quality, apparently. Another good reason for shredding anything which has your details on it. :D

The chap we share the house with has been persuading us not to put light bulbs in the rubbish for the last four years. Over Christmas we had a bit of a clearout and went to the tip twice: the first time we took this supply of light bulbs with us. I was mightily relieved to find a special place to put them all, in the cage with all the hazardous materials ...

However, it has encouraged me to put a box in the porch in which to store them.

    Our council collects batteries! Hurrah!

Sue, you should have hung on to a couple of those bulbs until this weekend - if you go along to B + Q they will swap two old-style bulbs for two new-style ones.

There is another thread elsewhere on the site on the same subject - just put this there, so will put it here too !

These lights also give you skin cancer, migraine and irritable bowel syndrome if you believe all the c**p in the papers.
But the good news is that as they last 8 times longer than conventional light bulbs there will be an 87.5% reduction in the number of deaths of people who fall off chairs/tables/ladders whilst replacing bulbs - and of course those who electrocute themselves doing the same !

We must have about 30 of the old style bulbs in the cupboard, is there a restriction on the offer?
