BT double price increase

I'm out of contract with BT . I have a broadband package that includes line rental (pay as you go) The email I was sent announcing their price increases says £3 increase for broadband package and £3 increase for Pay as you go. Total increase £6

my question is, if my broadband package includes the line rental, why am I being charged twice with the increase, and also, when I look at their increases on their website and on this website, it says up to £4 increase (including line rental)

why???

Does the broadband contract include the line rental? Most do not.

yes, I always had line rental as part of the broadband package. Back in the day you couldn't even have broadband without a phone line

That does not mean they are the same product though. They are usually two products, but one requires the other. It was largely only with the advent of full fibre that line rental is not required for broadband.

The £4 quoted increase might be for in contract packages?

Line rental and telephony are not the same thing , someone on broadband only still has line rental but it’s not a separate item it’s included in the broadband price .

Years ago , telephony was the main product and broadband added on top, caused great confusion as providers artificially loaded most of the costs onto ‘line rental’ so the broadband could be marketed as dishonestly low , for example, LR £20 (even though this was only £7 from Openreach ) and broadband £5 (was much lower that the true cost ) so a total bill of £25….this had to be changed , so many years ago so if someone took broadband and phone , the bill just shows £25 ,it doesn’t matter the individual costs of the two items as you needed one to get the other .

However things have changed , broadband can be had on its own and is the primary product, no longer the telephone, and not that many actually want to keep telephony they just want broadband…so a bill for those that do want telephony will show for example ( thus us a reasonable current cost ) broadband (including LR but no need to mention LR) £29 and the optional phone service ( not part of line rental ) £3 so £32 in total .

Some people, especially if they had legacy call plans , are in a bit of a half way house , the telephone removed from broadband, so the broadband shown lower in price , but when the the phone is included on LR put the price back to where it was , then the annual £3 increase , the extra £3 is irrelevant, check the price against new customer pricing , is it about the same ?

The reason why £4 is shown on new contracts (and has been for a few months ) is many providers put up the annual increase from £3 to £4 but it can’t be applied to current contracts , only when renewal or new customers join.

I called Bt today. I couldn't negotiate much since at the moment I can't full fibre, landlord said no. I took a new contract saving one pound. It's annoying because I'm paying just as much for slower internet just because landlord said no drilling on the building.

I believe sooner or later regular broadband will be phased out and not offered to new customer and landlord will have no choice but to allow a hole on the wall

Being out of contract now appears to let providers increase prices
