A call to the States

I need to call a business number (landline) in the States, so I think that none of the services that use the internet would be of use.

I'm hoping it will be just one call, but have no way of knowing how long it will be.

As it will probably be just one call, I don't want to sign up for a service.

I am with 1pMobile, and they show as charging 9p a minute for calls to the States.

Is there a cheaper way of making such a call?

You could look at 18185.co.uk I used to use it years ago for my business calls. It looks like calls to US numbers are 2.5p per minute.

A monthly Lebara SIM via MSE is £1.70, gives you 100 free minutes to US. 5p/min thereafter (I think).

On their website there is a message:

    • The call is charged the rate per minute plus your phone company’s access charge.

I couldn't see an access charge on 1pMobiles Tariff page for this type of call, but saw other access charges as high as 15p a minute.

Has anyone used 18185.co.uk with 1pMobile and could give me further information?

Not specific to 1p Mobile but the "access charge" in the case of using 18185.co.uk's mobile access number (020 81 80 2828) is the standard cost of UK calls on your mobile tariff - "free" if you have inclusive minutes or your per min charge on PAYG.

Internet services will be fine if they are designed to call landlines but are likely to charge you as a consequence.

Most VOIP providers are going to be about 2p/minute + vat for a call but if you dont want to sign up for a service (which may make the call free) then you are going to have to add credit for PAYG but most are going to have a minimum top up (my provider its £5)

I've decided to try 18185 and registered with them, and am now waiting for confirmation.
The instructions for phoning from a mobile look unusual.
If I have a U.S. number 1-800-xxx-xxxx, it looks like I should dial:
    0808 1 703703 and press send
    wait for the voiceprompt
then dial 001-800-xxx-xxxx but do NOT press send

    Does that sound correct?

I have accounts with other Finera companies, 18866 and 1899 and it's similar - you dial a UK number and that connects you to their system …. then dial the USA number

But do you refrain from pressing send after dialling the USA number?

And do you precede the USA number with 001 or with just 1?

Been a while since I used it and can't really remember, sorry. Don't think I pressed 'green' again - is RTFM possible? 😉
