Thames Water, two meters and confusion!
I wonder if someone can help us with a confusing water meter issue with Thames Water and our water meter.
We are in a property of 6 flats with water meters at the front of the property.
In February 2020, Thames Water swapped our analogue water meter (A) for a digital water meter (B). We received a letter which stated that the meter serial was switched.
Around 2023 I contacted Thames Water as our water usage seemed very high. They investigated a leak but it came back without anything found.
Forward to December 2025 and I realised our usage was still high - more so as we have been away and on one of these days the digital reading showed we had used 188 litres of water, when we weren’t even in the property.
Our building management sent out a plumber who discovered that meter (A) was still connected to the property, but we were being billed for meter (B). It seems Thames Water switched the meter on their system, but not physically.
Thames Water sent an engineer to check this (it was correct) today and has now replaced meter (A) with a digital meter.
However, this is where things get strange. I decided to have a look at the billing from 2020 when the meter was supposedly switched to see what the usage had bee over the last 6 years. I found the following:
Meter A (Analogue)
Reading on 25/02/2020: 1786
Reading on 17/02/2026: 2228
Delta: 442
Meter B (Digital which was have been on our bill)
Reading on 26/02/2020: 0
Reading on 17/02/2026: 442
They are exactly the same. This suggests to me that both meters are connected to the property, although when the plumber turned off meter stop cocks for these meters, only Meter (A) stopped the flow to our property, so this again is confusing. Could it just be a coincidence? It still does not explain the water usage when we are out the property.
Could we be sharing a meter with another property?
Thames Water have said I need to engage a plumber to look into this, but I'm not sure what to look for exactly, but maybe someone can shed some light.
