Thanks. Checked the cistern and the water goes up to one inch below overflow pipe , so think that's ok. No plastic bits floating around in there.

I think now there is only one pipe that sends water into bowl after having a feel around, so it alone sends water around the rim. So no other holes. But what I said looked like rust with the mirror is actually a soft thickish gunge going round the rim. I think I'll get to the bottom of this by the weekend with warm water washing up liquid and rubber gloves. Says Dudley on toilet.

    Water level sounds fine, then.

A single supply 'pipe' from the cistern to the toilet is normal, regardless of whether the pipe is visible or not; the water comes from the cistern to the pan at a single point.

The cistern is then designed in different ways to channel that flow all around so it sweeps the whole pan surface, and also provides a decent force. Some designs are better than others, and some will have small flaws in the moulding - I note in one of mine there's a small area that isn't 'bathed', but that isn't really a problem unless a bit of tissue annoyingly sits there.

Is yours a 'low level' toilet? Ie, can you see the connecting pipe, and it's L-shaped? If so, and if the pan isn't sealed to the floor, then it's usually easy to remove, and you might find that makes it easier to get access to these wee holes, and you could even use a hose or pressure washer to blast them! (Mask on to guard against aerosols).

If the stuff you see is thick and gloopy and coating the holes, then it could well be reducing flow a significant amount. What could it be - a primordial soup?

Hopefully not hijacked this thread but hi cherry76 , says problem has been sorted.

So , yes low level toilet and now understand it's just one jet of water that goes into bowl and around rim.
Mine has no holes. But have given rim first clean with brillow pad squeezed into rim , and wow. First flush and water gushing out at other side of bowl (or is it pan) when it wasn't before. That i think has done it.
But put so much washing up liquid in the cistern yesterday to soften it all which has meant that the bubbles come up to the toilet seat even after 4 flushes and can't see progress.. So will leave till tomorrow.
Just need a sort of very small hooked toothbrush to get in the rim in the tightest place. Will find something.

    Good news.

Careful where you leave your toothbrush afterwards.

    Will do.
Visit different work places in my job. Today flushed their toilets looking at how the water falls. All different but i guess same principle. One gush at the front lifts the deposits off the bottom of the bowl and the other gush at the back helps to send it on it's way.
