State Pension Overpayment
Very sadly my wife died recently. Because of waiting for various medical bureaucratic procedures the earliest I could register her death was last Thursday, February 5th. Today her state pension has been paid in full into her account. It's now sixteen days since she died. Am I going to have to go through the hassle of waiting 50 minutes or longer to report this overpayment or will they contact me directly to reclaim the sixteen days that shouldn't have been paid? I really could do without having to phone the DWP and I registered the death on the first available date.

Sorry for your loss and the emotional rollercoaster you will now be on.
When you registered her death, what did the registrar say about being over the 5 days or 8 if you are in Scotland?
How did you notify DWP and when?
There is a dedicated DWP Bereavement Service phone number 0800 151 2012 (M-F 8-6).

Thank you very much.
Registration (in England) was ten days after my wife died, or nine if you allow for it being in the evening. The Registrar said nothing at all. I notified the DWP via the Tell Us Once service the same day as registration.

They will figure it out and deduct the payment.

Thank you but none of the examples cited apply and probate isn't necessary.

There was a big thing on this last year, personally they just take time to communicate within the departments but if the computer hasn't registered the monthly payment stopping yet that's their error.
Leave it and wait for a recovery letter of overpayments. It's a pain but very common issue.

You know, I think that's what I'm going to do. To be blunt I've got enough on my hands right now. Their error. I'll wait for them to get in touch. In any case it says if there's no response to a letter they'll recover from the bank and as ours was/is a joint account they can take it from there

In that case I'd leave it for now to give them time to catch up and process the information after which they'll initiate any necessary recovery of funds. If the payments are four-weekly and the next one also lands then I'd suggest contacting them on the bereavement line as something may have gone awry.

I agree one hundred percent; you're still grieving. The system doesn't recognize that, but send them to coventry so speak kindly. You take your time. The one lesson you learned is it doesn't care for anyone.

Yes, funeral is still three days away and I could do without this.
