Time for a new laptop

It's and old model and does not have what's needed to put windows 11 onto it.

That's understandable given all the hype that has been around Windows 11 exclusions. The truth is that Wnidows 10 can run on any computers/laptops made in about the last 10-15 years as long as thay have a processor that supports 64 bit computing [most did after about 2010-ish] There is a relatively easy work around [lots of videos now on-line] that show you can upgrade an old laptop/PC to Windows 11, which in theory in unsupported but the actual reality is that I upgraded my 2012 era PC to Windows 11 [even though it was not a supported] about two years ago and it still receives all updates and security patches from Microsoft. I am typing this reply on the aforementioned PC.
To check whether your laptop in 64 bit. Look in Settings>System>About
and then the page displayed will bring up all your laptop specs. One of the lines will contain 'system type'
If it states 64 bit, then you can upgrade, if 32 bit then you cannot.
With regard to office suites, there is a free option out there called Libre Office that has all you need and no ongoing cost.
If you do go down the route of a new laptop, Chromebooks that have been mentioned are good but with one caveat, remember that for full functionality you are tied into Google and you will always need an internet connection to use everthing fully on offer. Also there is no guarantee that Google might change the way it operates in futurewith regard to Chromebooks, in that they might start charging to access parts that are currently free or even do away with parts they think are longer part of their core business. Anyone remember 'Picassa' a good photo editor from Google that I used for a number of years that was free until they decided to scrap it.
So in short, as this forum is about saving money, it might be worth just investigating whether you can actually upgrade your old laptop, rather than spending out money you don't need to.

There doesn't seem to be any way of editing posts and I noticed a typo the line should say:

I have a very capable desktop PC that doesn’t meet the requirements for an official upgrade to W11. My solution was to leave it running W10, which is still being supported until the autumn at least.
I'm reluctant to install W11 using a workaround, as there’s no reason for Microsoft to support such PCs, and they may stop updates for them.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Mine does say 64 bit, I passed this onto the chap I used a couple of years back, who sorted out an issue I had and he said it was not compatible with windows 11. Once I back home from work I'll post the full info I found.
It's still working fine with windows 10, I'm just worrying (probably unnecessarily) now the updates have stopped.

Updates have not ended, but you need to enroll in the extended support program, which is very easy. See

Doesn't make much sense, if they are going to stop supporting Windows 10 anyway. The thing being that some people don't really understand what is happening, so run in a wrong direction.
Hint: It is better to install Windows 11 via workarounds.

It will work fine with Windows 11, until at least Oct '27.

Microsoft strongly advises against. I suppose you think that MRDA.

The difficulty is credibility. There’s this enormous corporation saying that it’s risky to run their software on unsupported machines. And, yes, of course, they have an axe to grind. Nevertheless, if they choose, they can stop updating unsupported machines tomorrow.
And, here’s an anonymous bloke on the internet, who says that they are lying. There’s a slur in your post that anyone who doesn’t agree with you isn’t capable of thinking for themselves. That’s paradoxical, because anyone disagreeing with you must be thinking for themself!
