Joint UC claim and carers allowance
Good evening all. I have a question on Carers allowance. I have just got married and my wife gets carers allowance. We have a child who is on highest rate for care and mobility. My wife gets 89 a week for being his carer.
UC have said because of my earnings my wife will loose the payment. We thought my earning would not count towards this she is his main carer and can not work. She has no earning at all.
All the calculators we have used and charities we have looked at for advice all say my earning are not counted in this aspect of the claim.
Many thanks for your help and advice in advance.

I think she can still get carers allowance but not carers element. They are more or less the same amount but one is attached to UC.

This is what I thought as well.

Are you sure she’s getting carers allowance?

Yes she defiantly get that. But now they are saying she wont get that now because of my earnings.

I think they may have been talking about carers element as to my knowledge UC have nothing to do with Carers Allowance. Or they just don’t know.

In the journal it says Carers Allowance. It has to be a mistake.

She can continue to claim and be paid Carers Allowance, this is nothing to do with your earnings. However this will be deducted £ for £ from your Universal Credit Payment. She can claim the Carer's Element of UC, this element has no relation to earnings.

Were you living together before you got married as if so nothing should change.

As above she can claim carers allowance which is paid separately from UC but deducted in full from UC. She can then also claim the carers element of UC as long as she does not get the LCWRA element of UC. Your earnings reduce the whole award.

She can also claim Carers Allowance completely separate from UC if you earn too much for a UC claim.
