My old desktop worth saving anything ?

I have an old computer that seized up a while ago. It's taking up space and I want rid of it. Should I rescue anything from it ie tv card or mother board. (it was built in 2001 for me).

If not I don't want to dump it with the hard drive in but I dont know what to take out or how to make it safe.

Any hints would be fab
TIA

You may want to keep the TV card (depending on what comes with your next PC) other than that I'd agree with Inactive.

Take the HDD out and smash them up with a lump hammer. I will be doing this to my old ones very soon as I've just upgraded.
  • If you list the components people might be able to tell you what's worth saving (if any). Might not be much there if it was built in 2001 though!

If you know a bit about computers I would say always keep a few spare parts about (hard drive, memory etc.) That way if your hardware breaks down you can swap them in to find out which part has gone bust.

To take out the hard drive you need to open your case. The hard drive itself is usually the little box attached to rack under your CD/DVD drive. Unplug it from the motherboard and the PSU (or just remove all the cables on the back) and unscrew it from the rack to remove.

I kept the floppy disk drive because my new PC hasn't got one.

Take out the hard drive, keep for spare or add to new PC if possible.

The memory will be different on the new PC, if SDRAM it's making money on ebay, possibly more than current types of memory.

Offer the rest on Freecycle, around here PC bits are gone in minutes.

If it has a DVD re writer I would take that out and add it to the new pc to make twin DVD re writable drives makes it a lot quicker when backing up data.

Well don't just dump it, google recycling PCs.
Computers have lots of valuable metals and also some hazardous waste components, stuff that really really doesn't belong in a landfill.
