Go here and scroll down to the "Features" section to see a comparison of both apps. Basically, Groundwire is a more advanced version of Acrobits Softphone that supports messaging and transfers/conferencing. It's only slightly more expensive, so I always recommend going with Groundwire.

As for the rest, your understanding is correct.

I'm just thinking about this. I am only interested in incoming calls, as I am a home user, and just want to keep the number for those people who already know it, I use my mobile for outgoing calls. Andrews and Arnold suggest using Zoiper, which is free. For my usage is there any point in going to Acrobits?

Thank you so much. It was a bit of a steep learning curve, but I have my landline number on my mobile from Andrews and Arnold, using the acrobits Groundwire app. I'm not sure I have all the settings right, but it is working.

I hope that my transfer of my phone from Hyperoptic (keeping my broadband with them) will go through. I filled in the One Touch Switch form, and at first sight all seemed to go well. But then I got an email from A&A sales, saying that the switch had been cancelled because Hyperoptic had no porting arrangement with A&As porting partner. I then found out Hyperoptic's porting partner and told A&A who they were. They then said that they should be able to port. I also made contact with A&A's CEO, who is keeping an eye on the matter.

So at the moment I am waiting to see if they can do the switch. They should be able to do so, and it really shouldn't take long to organise, though I understand it can take quite a while to make the actual switch.

I have just had confirmation from both Andrews and Arnold and Hyperoptic that the port from HO to A&A is going ahead. There's still a week before the actual port, but hopefully it will go through with no further issues.
