I am moving to an area with EE but after I got a new broadband company last year utility warehouse open reach drilled one of those new routers in with a plug and it left a large hole in my plasterboard. I had to pay to fix this. And also lost a plug. Can I refuse or is it better to go to virgin don’t they also make a mess? Last time he said he would try keep the old phone socket but installed this anyway bit like smart meters?

It largely depends if your new property is in a full fibre area or not, and if so whether it's already been installed. You won't know until you've moved in.

    What is already installed?

    Ask the agent or seller.

If moving from internet via the phone line to anything else a new hole will need to be drilled whether it is by Openreach, Virgin or anyone else that provides the physical infrastructure.

If it is the older VM coax then the only powered device is the router, otherwise you will need power to the ONT as you do now and also to the router.

It's a bit late to refuse it after it's been done.

Openreach is phasing out copper phone lines. Once an exchange has gone fibre, they won't offer anything else to new customers. That includes anyone switching from one provider to another. It's fibre or nothing.

If you need a phone line, that's now something you have to ask EE about. I switched to Vodafone, and I plug my phone into their router. The phone socket on the wall no longer works. Some providers offer phone as part of the deal while others charge extra. Be aware that if your old phone number is no longer connected, then it will soon be recycled and given to someone else.

Virgin use their own fibres or coaxial cables. So that's another hole to drill.

I'm not worried about losing sockets as the Openreach ONT box and the Vodafone router are both plugged into a multi-way socket strip.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
