The only proof he had was her address, DOB, and N/I number.

That may be all he had, but it would have linked in to the medical certification of death etc from the hospital that you need to register a death - nowadays these can usually be sent straight to the registrar from the hospital / coroner / nursing home etc and then on to the funeral director electronically rather than paper forms passing through the hands of the next of kin who's registering the death and arranging the funeral .

I believe he prepaid in the hospital to pick up copies of the death certificate that she also forwarded. I personally thought although it was helpful, it felt very cold, just a commodity and a number.

Tell us once will not cover his private pension or his bank and savings accounts so they will need to contacted seperately. You mother will likely be able to claim single occupancy discount for council tax and the tell us once won’t deal with that either.

Does he have a will in place? Do they own a home? If they do is is in joint names?

Yes they own a home and I am not sure if it is in joint names? What if it isn't in joint names and only in the name of my father?

    How do I check?

There is no mortgage or loans or anything - they just have bank accounts for savings, no shares or property other than the one they live in.

Read this page for an explanation of the different types of ownership:

    https://www.gov.uk/joint-property-ownership

If your parents do not have the deeds available, you can get a copy of the title register from the land registry site here for a small fee (£7) which will show the type of ownership:

If it's registered and in his sole name probate will be required following his death to enable his executor to then deal with the property

If it's registered in both names probate will not be required and the legal ownership passes to the surviving joint owner to deal with as appropriate

The 'Tell Us Once' service does not include HMLR as in very simple terms we register Land and not people

Our online guidance explains what can be done next re the property following an owner's death HMLR Guide: Start - External  · HM Land Registry

I used it 18 months ago.

Worked for most things, but relevant one, PiP, ESA did nothing.

After around 2 months i contacted PiP they owed £30 ish.

    Never got anything from ESA.

I told, banks, credit cards, gas, water and electricity.

    Just for speed.

So if probate is required what does that entail? Or should we try to register in joint names?

If probate does that mean what is written in the will?

If so everything should pass to my mother.

Applying for probate: Apply for probate - GOV.UK answers your Qs

If the property is registered in their joint names then following the death of one of them the legal ownership passes to the surviving joint owner to deal with. Probate is not required for the deceased joint owner as the property doe snot form part of their estate
