That would be one exceedingly long battery! It needs at least 2, to my eyes. Potentially 3 but difficult to tell.
A cover is definitely required either way.

There are two battery images/symbols but I think it looks like you need 3 AA batteries
Edit: is this an Actim Kian alarm clock? Online specs indicate it needs 3 AAA batteries.
