STWA - Water Usage Doubled Since New Meter Fitted

Similar problems. A new smart meter has been installed. Shortly after received a call from Anglian Water to say we were using 66 litres per hour day and night. I turned off our stopcock but meter was still whizzing around. Then received a letter from AW headed “PLEASE FIX LEAK WE TOLD YOU ABOUT”. Body of letter said we would be charged £3085 ( so far) . Terrifying. It seems that AW make the assumption that it’s the customer’s fault whereas in fact there are other explanations, either a leak in AW pipework or a faulty meter. To assume that a massive leak has suddenly sprung up in a customer’s property shortly after having a smart meter installed is ridiculous . I’ve written to AW about receiving such a frightening letter but no response.

Severn Trent have a mobile phone app where you can view your smart meter water hourly, this would at least show if you had a leak as you should use no water at various times of the day.
I suspect it's on the website too if you are able to take a look

water bills are going through the roof mainly because shareholders have been given all the money in dividens that is supposed to go back into infrastructure. Certainly not a communist but natural monopolies should definitely be government owned my water bill went up 100% as well but they told us so to pay for the infrastructure they hadn't been investing in

No, they are not. Water bills are increasing because profit has been extracted, but that is less than 5% of the increase. The vast majority of the increase is because we as a nation have significantly under invested in our infrastructure for many decades. Water bills should have been far higher than they have been for decades, they were kept low for political reasons but eventually that lead to a state where we have to catch up with investment, maintenance, development as well as insulating against the impacts of climate change, so bills have to rise to cover the decades of underinvestment.
