I know, but they don't have their basic version of the product for £2.95. Should they?

Why are you even talking about renting a router is the real question. Plenty of other options out there.

So I found some on Ebay for under £10 - not excatly sure what I am looking for in terms of
items of specfics, found a TP-Link Router Archer D2 ADSL for £7.58

I tried Googling how to set-up and I'm complety lost as some videos talk about modem and router - I'm just swapping it out.

I will go ahead and buy my own, is it that simple - cable swap like I have done over the years each time I change provider, find the WIFI on my devices and type in router password and done?

Which provider are you going with? Do they have a list of routers they could supply? Might be a good place to start?

Likely that you will need to configure the router to connect to the new FTTP service, hopefully just entering a user id and password supplied by the ISP.

POP Telecom - they list routers but for renting.

If the service is via the Openreach (former BT) network then you need an ADSL/VDSL Modem Router. As suggested above POP Telecom list the range of routers they will supply so you could just look to buy one of those. The previously mentioned TP-Link W9970 is a basic model that can be picked up very cheaply, it does the job (assuming you're not gaming etc that requires the best connections)

Supplying your own router you would need to get the log in details from your ISP and configure those in the router. It's not desperately complex, first thing is to get one and then you can look up the instructions for that model.

@bagand96 the OP is getting FULL FIBRE so doesn't need a ADSL/VDSL modem router at all, whether or not POP use the Openreach infrastructure.

I have full fibre already - it was done last year. Put order for Broadband in and had this reply:

"I’m writing to inform you that, unfortunately, we are unable to provide the service at your current address. As a result, we will need to cancel your order, as we cannot proceed with the installation at this location."

  • Who was the old supplier? Pop Telecom use Freedom Fibre for the fibre network. If your existing broadband is supplied by another network and Freedom Fibre haven't rolled out in your area then you're out of luck.
