ha, goodness people like to be pompous and superior.
Im grasping the legal issues. I asked the question to understand that.It still doesn't make it good customer service to refuse to support a product that's less than a month old. I 'grasp' that there is no legal requirement for them to do otherwise.

Well then, you should also have grasped that you aren't the customer, so why should you be the recipient of customer service?
And they're not refusing to support the product, they're refusing to support you.

yea, got it. Thanks

But they are not 'refusing to support a product that is less than a month old'. You are just refusing to follow the correct procedure to get a solution.

No-one is being pompous or superior.
You are failing to grasp that you are not the customer so why would the manufacturer / retailer provide you with any customer service?
In a way I think it is a good thing that an individual with a faulty £400 item but no proof of purchase is not being provided with the same level of support as a verifiable customer would be able to receive. Otherwise, there would be no way for retailers / manufacturers to refuse service to individuals that may have come into the product via nefarious means.
I would be delighted to have people I do not really know that well gifting me £400 items. Or, is there more to this route of the item reaching you than the thread reveals?
