I findI find it is really strange if your name is Frederick John Blogs then you can get on the plane if you put the ticket in the name of Frederick John Blogs or in the name of Frederick Blogs but not in the name of John Blogs

Doesn't seem strange to me tbh - particularly in Western cultures, the first name is the significant one, with second or middle names being secondary and often optional. Anyone choosing to refer to themselves by the latter will soon become familiar with the issues this brings, when it comes to formal ID such as passports….

The OP has really only breach of contract (with the agency) but I'm guessing that they've got only the call record (i.e. phone bill) to prove that the contact itself took place. Not clearcut without some follow-up action by them, the airline or even just the OP before the flight detailing the name change.
They can try chargeback or Money Claim Online (MCOL) as it's a London based business.
