They are closing the old Leicester BS branch I used in my youth and gave me my first mortgage and the kids opened their first savings accounts, surprised it was still there when I went back a couple of years ago for the first time in 40 years.

The England list includes Banbridge, which is in Northern Ireland.
The BT postcode is a clue for any journalist who didn't know this already.

It's not really a story these days, it must be 27 years since I last went into a bank branch.

But how is that relevant to those who do use branches (for all the reasons covered in previous threads about such closures, which almost always end up being sidetracked by opinions about how useful branches are)?

Absolutely. I'd imagine most people are aware of the banking industry's direction of travel in terms of branch closures, but the idea that the result of such an awareness means it becomes a non-story for everyone is ridiculous. @Rob5342 might not have been in a branch for 27 years but if you go and take a look at many bank branches you'll be able to see that plenty of other people still use them.
The other issue that often gets overlooked by some is that of local businesses that use branches for their banking.

Absolutely. Friday lunchtime and Monday morning were very busy times at my branch of NatWest with local businesses banking cash - at least it was until they closed the branch. Absolutely bonkers!!

Whilst I don't like to see branches closing, mainly for the feeling of community cohesion, the reality is people will adapt.
When Dad was alive he was well into his eighties when Barclays closed in town. He would go in every Friday and cash a cheque and pay bills. He soon adapted to using his card at the post office and setting up direct debits.
Choice is being taken away, that isn't in question, but to all those who say, well what about the elderly - they do adapt. They may not use technology, but the reality is they don't need to. Their day to day banking can be managed by some behavioural change and use of the post office

And of course things move through generations. Wind forward 20 or 30 years and there will probably be another way to manage your money, apps will seem as archaic as branches are today and people will be saying how will the minority cope when banks drop their apps.

It's only those fossilised dinousaurs who won't get with it and start using the 'mind chip ®'…
