Complex Law

Hi,

I had clicked on one of those ads for PCP commission claims with a company called Complex Law and registered in January 2025. Since then i had become aware that there was no need to engage with one of these companies and that the car finance company would contact me direct, which they have. Out of the blue in January 2026 i received an update from Complex Law basically saying everything that had been covered in the news around the supreme court decision. I emailed them to say that i would like to cancel given the changing advice. I then got an email saying that they would be charging a cancellation fee of £250 when they have done nothing to date on my behalf. I have refused to pay this and threatened with taking them to the legal ombudsmen. Cancellation should be made 14 days after signing up they said and this was contained within the small print of a lengthy document and also on their website it is on faded tiny writing at the bottom of the page.

    Everything they said seems correct.

From what you have just said it'll likely be them taking steps to recover the cancellation fee that you owe as you signed up, agreed to their Ts and Cs and did not cancel within the specified period.

The detail of the FCA scheme isnt yet set, they have proposed that lenders have to proactively reach out to people but whilst the consultation has ended the final confirmed scheme hasn't yet been.

Unfortunately this is a lesson in reading what you are agreeing to rather than just clicking the box saying "I agree". In principle you appointing them would generate activities at their end to set up a file etc send out various comms and potentially sending comms to the lenders (depending on what level of detail you gave them to start with).

They are correct in saying the cooling off period is 14 days and that in principle cancelling the agreement also generates activities they have to do to close down the file.

The main thing is to go through your emails and check that they provided everything they should have when you signed up.
