Missed connection STN-DUB-ADE

Hi,  I was recently on a flight Stansted Dubai Adelaide which was fully ticketed through.  The flight left a little late from STN and was held for a few mintues at Dubai so I was 30 minutes late with a 1 hour connection.  The connection was missed for the flight to Adelaide.  I was re-ticketed to Melbourne then Adelaide the next morning.  I wonder if the UK EU compensation rules apply?  I assume people will say this was down to air traffic control but also interesting as it is out of EU if it was down to the airline what the rules are?

A journey starting from the UK is within the scope of the UK regulations (separate from the EU ones post-Brexit), and it's the whole end-to-end journey that counts where booked through on a single ticket reference, so compensation eligibility would be judged on delay to arrival time at your final destination.

As you rightly anticipate though, if the delay was caused by ATC restrictions at some point, then the airline will be able to deny compensation on the grounds of extraordinary circumstances, but there's nothing to lose by trying a claim anyway and seeing what they say.

P.S. If you're using IATA airport codes then Dubai is DXB; DUB is Dublin!

And Adelaide is ADL; ADE is Aden!

IMHO anyone who books a flight via Dubai with only 1 hour transfer time is asking for trouble. Same applies to connecting flights via any major airport.
In some airports it can take longer than that to disembark 1st flight and walk to departure gate for 2nd. And it leaves absolutely no margin for a delayed departure.

Emirates will only sell flight itineraries if they comply with the minimum connecting time there, with an hour unquestionably being right on the cusp, and run the risk of having to fork out under UK261 if unable to achieve that (for reasons deemed within their control) for passengers starting in the UK, but yes, many would feel uncomfortable with cutting things so tight on a long-haul journey!
