Certain banks will routinely slap a block on accounts where letters are returned "not at this address" or "gone away"
I was on the receiving end of this a few years ago when the postman delivered some mail to the wrong address, and the people at that address returned it "Gone away". Next thing I know my online access is blocked, I'm having to prove my home address, and the bank person can't change my address on the system because it hasn't actually changed. (The workaround was to write my street name in lower case)

That's either a badly designed staff interface, or a training gap - it should be possible to remove a "gone away" flag from a customer record.

Mucking up the address data as a work-around is a bad solution!  Exactly the sort of thing that gets data people really annoyed with branch staff!!

At our previous house we would regularly get mail for the previous owner, mostly junk but also one that looked like an annual statement for something. After several years of returning them with "not at this address" I eventually opened one. It was the chap's annual pension statement, with quite a sum of money involved.

I phoned up the pension company and their initial stance was defensive and accusing. How dare I open someone else's mail? So I pointed out that it was probably better for them to stop sending confidential information to my address and that they also should improve their handling of returned mail. I can't say his mood changed much but the mail did. I've no idea whether they found the new address (we didn't have it).
