I have just been sent $51 from amazon as part of it's settlement agreement . It seems genuine. But my Building Society wont accept the cheque as it is a foreign currency ( US $$). Can anyone suggest how I can cash the cheque? I dont have an alternative bank account.

$51 sounds like this:OP if you qualify for the refund, were you resident in the US at the time? Do you still have access to a US bank account?N. Hampshire, he/him. Consumers outside of the US were not covered by the settlement so some background on how you obtained it may be helpful?
Most high street banks will accept a foreign currency cheque though the fees are fairly steep and may take most of the value of the cheque0 -
I've received $25 in a cheque too. It says on the letter you can get it paid via paypal which I thought might be worth a go, but I can't work out how without 'filing a claim'. Especially since I'm not sure why I qualify?! I have used amazon.com to send gifts to my sister who lived there, so I'm assuming it's that?0

I have also had a cheque for $51 - as part of a settlement in the US of a lawsuit (which I didn't know about). I too am finding it very difficult to find a bank or Building Society to accept payment into a UK account - polite refusals from Firstdirect, Nationwide, Yorkshire B.S. Can anyone help with advice on how to pay in or 'cash' this cheque please?0

Per this thread, maybe try Lloyds / Halifax / BOS?

I received a cheque for $51 as a settlement payment from Amazon, but my bank (Barclays) wont accept it as they no longer accept foreign currency cheques. I have tried to take this up with the people whose details are on the letter that accompanied the cheque, but I can't seem to be able to contact them? The letter also says that the cheque will be void after February 21.
Am I being naive and this is just a scam?0 -
Sounds a bit odd. Cheques are usually valid for 6 months from the date of issue. What is the payment supposed to be for - were you expecting it? Who's details are on the letter?I can't immediately see what the scam would be, but it does sound a little unusual. If it's genuine, do you have a friend or family member who could pay it into their account for you? It's a long time since I've deposited a non-sterling cheque, but there was no problem in doing so - although there was a fee charged.0

Its not a scam, all AMERICAN customers got this pay out, assuming the OP is British you would have to question why he or she was in scope to get it.0

There's a few people in the same position. It's an Amazon Prime redress payment, but should only have been paid to US residents (who will have less trouble cashing a dollar cheque).Try this thread:N.
