Using Standalone Car Insurance Policies

Stand-alone excess policies work very well. We have had to claim a couple of times and on each occasion the refund has arrived before the credit card bill. Unfortunately Hire Companies make much of their profit from insurance policies and strongly motivate collection desk staff to sell them. Their performances are impressive but just politely say no thank you at each opportunity. Do not get into a discussion about why you do not want to take their policies.

Probably worth editing your post to say you are talking about Hire Car Excess Insurance, the title doesnt really follow and you can get excess policies for your personal car too.
Not all policies are equal, historically some wouldnt payout on below excess losses and whilst you have been lucky some hire car companies are very reluctant to provide you evidence of their losses which most excess companies want, unlike car excess insurance.1
