eBay - fragile item arrived very poorly packed, unable to test - could I return?

Put yourself in my shoes - why should I have to reach out and offer to pay postage and placate the seller because they poorly packaged it? Obviously idiot buyers exist, but for the purpose of this discussion lets just assume I'm not a chancer.
And reporting them for what? As a business they are obligated to accept returns even if it wasn't faulty.
Blocking - fair enough, I can understand that.
Exactly. And of course the piezo crystals inside that aren't visible. Or the plastic fittings on the top.
Anyway, I emailed the seller to explain and opened return with "change of mind":
- turns out it was simple delivery so had I of said it was damaged eBay would've footed the bill
- the listing had "Seller pays return postage" so it was a non-issue really
- the seller was immediately sent an angry email saying they'd only be refunding if they were absolutely sure it hadn't been fitted, it'd been UV marked and they'd be checking, blah blah blah. Just unnecessarily aggressive
- because it was a managed return, despite all the bluster as soon as I dropped it off I was instantly refunded

Not sure why the seller would have been sent an angry email, the emails I've had from ebay saying I need to accept a return have been quite polite.
I expect your refund is provisional, if the seller reports a problem with the returned item, incomplete or not the one sent etc ebay may well reverse the refund.
