As someone with £77k available credit (£14k utilised) on a £47k salary with zero issues getting new credit cards I wonder if I am unusual.born_again said:

have you looked at mse credit club and credit karma which are linked to transunion
income 35k, debt (car) 17k + £4K CC limit
So I'm going to say Affordability.
I've never been convinced that overall credit limits matter much at all. Some regular posters insist you wont get good offers if you have a high credit limit already. Some other very regular posters used to insist that it didn't matter, but they have largely disappeared from the forum, with a lot of those left insisting that it is an issue.
I've had over my income in credit limits for at least 20 years. At times it has been well over twice my income. I retired 3 years ago and took a part-time job at a lower salary, so had a drop in income. Banks have occasionally asked me to update my details, including employment and income.
Halifax has just written to me today to tell me my credit limit is going up from £6k to £11k. That's four cards I now have with limits over £10k. I'm stoozing around £20k on interest-free deals, which is mainly in regular savers, but means I have around half my income in debt.
One of my highest credit limits is a historic Barclaycard which still pays me 0.5% cashback. I had a dispute with them around a holiday payment during Covid. They ended up giving me over £1000 as a settlement. Since then they've gone through several rounds of cutting or slashing credit limits, with a lot of MSE members being very upset at the way they were treated, yet they've left me alone. Given they will be paying me more in cashback than they receive in exchange fees I'd have thought I was more bother than I'm worth, but they don't seem to have viewed it that way.
How these things work is quite opaque, but the issues people face don't seem to apply to me.0
