I see a hall as the area where you enter and leave your shoes/coat etc. before entering the living areas - not wasted space. I think entering directly into the lounge is a bit ick to be honest, and furniture gets in the way of the entry area if it's an open plan hall/living room.

I'd probably pop in a pocket door to avoid space being taken up with an opening door, and I'd try to put a door through from the hall into the storage/utility too.

I think it might be a 30's semi, and typically the hallways were pretty narrow. If so, that could be another reason why it was removed.

I agree - the general layout and the two chimney breasts on the ground floor strongly suggest that. As well as the style of the balustrade.

The odd thing on the ceiling does look like coving/moulding where the original wall was, dividing a hallway from the room at the front.  And the crack on the wall may be a superficial one at the junction where plasterboard boarding over the original door into the kitchen meets the original solid wall that divided the two reception rooms.

That said, if the EA's plan is accurate then the 1.65m width of the hallway is on the narrow side, and as drawn the corridor width (indicated by my green arrows) looks too narrow for a doorway.  However, the first-floor plan shows the same 1.65m width divided between the stairs and the landing in proportions that would work OK, so if anything I'd doubt the accuracy of the ground floor plan.  A tape measure would quickly confirm.

A lounge that doesn't contain the stairs or the front door will be a lot easier to heat than one with both those two features.

In addition to @Silvertabby 's suggestion about looking at previous sale particulars for similar houses on the road, also consider looking at the planning portal for any applications relating to similar houses, which may have plans ...

My brother ripped out the hallway / lounge wall several years ago, he has just put a wall back in !
