Hey
Unfortunately the washing machine has now decided to come up with a f05 error just as I was hoping to get some clothes clean and fresh for a donation collection coming in a few days
Anyway am with domestic and general for insurance can we call them up for this as mum and me are disabled (me temporarily have a frozen shoulder) if it is a blocked waste pipe that needs clearing?

Yes if you have cover for your appliances ring them up.

  • F05 is usually a drainage issue (blocked pump / filter or waste pipe). Insurance sometimes covers it, but many policies exclude blockages unless you’ve got specific appliance cover. Worth checking the policy wording before calling so you know what to ask for. Also, if it’s just the filter/pump, a local repairer can often sort it cheaper and faster than going through insurance.

Probably best to put this under In the Home (DIY) section

I have an older model with the filter/waste pipe botton front behind a panel which is accessible for most and cleaned.

I failed to read the manual to check on annual maintenance advice until prompted to by the Prepping board.

Fortunately it was relelatively clean which I put down to my use of white vinegar rather than softener.

Make and model of WM, please?
No idea if they'll cover what they may consider a user-maintenance issue. So perhaps we can guide you on checking the filter? Or, ask D&G when you call them up - explain neither of you are currently in a physical position to check even the filter, and see if that's ok with them.

AFAIK, most washing machines have this removable cover at the front. Then you can unscrew the filter, although it is typically pretty stiff.
Normally the problem is a hairband, or some thin strip of fabric, or even a pound coin, that stops the pump turning.

That error code indicates a drainage issue on a lot of machines.  The first thing to do is check the filter - it may simply be blocked with gunge or coins or whatever.  It's very simple to check - but if you're not able to do it yourself, do you have a family member or friendly neighbour who may be able to take a quick look for you?
Often that's all it'll be - a very simple and quick DIY fix.  The waste pipe itself may be blocked or kinked - a little more tricky since you will need to pull the machine away from the wall, and they're heavy beasts.  But if you can get to it, it's very easy to check.
It may be the pump itself, in which case that probably would be worth a call to D&G.
But if you're able, checking/cleaning the filter may very well give you a quick (and free) solution.

It's not always simple to check.  We had a washine machine which didn't have a filter and we had to get an engineer in twice during the life of the machine.  The current machine does have a filter and we've not had any problem despite never cleaning it out!

OP, we used to have a D&G policy and they are usually pretty good. As their policies are appliance specific you are probably covered for any fault. Check your docs. If you have to, just play dumb. How are you supposed to know what code F05 means ! Clearing the blockage might not be straightforward.

In my experience it is worth checking it occasionally, if only because the longer you leave it the more difficult it is to unscrew the cap !
