Me and wife used the online serivice at gov.uk to do this. Its very straightforward and from memory cost something like £70 each.early retirement wannabe2

It is pretty easy online followed by getting a few witnessed signatures (within a shortish timescale if the docs have to be posted around). It costs £92 each for the health one and the financial one. No need to pay someone else to do itStevo197 said:I have been given a price from my personal financial advisor to sort my power of attorney out which includes property and financial affairs....we have been quoted £980...is this right as it seems expensive tho...

..simple enough to do it online yourself, the Gov website is very helpful and leads you through the process,It now costs £90 for each one, so £180 for both per person, £980 is a complete rip off!!.."It's everybody's fault but mine...."2

Thanks for the advice, think I will have a go myself now...2

My husband and I each had both types done with a solicitor last year at a cost of £1500 (so for 4 LPAs).
Yes, you can do it yourself online, but the expert advice we received was invaluable and they sort out the registration for you. Money well spent, in my opinion, as you need to be very sure you've expressed your wishes correctly and there are no errors, which could invalidate the forms.0 -
I would agree with your regarding wills, best to get a solicitor to do them.queline said:My husband and I each had both types done with a solicitor last year at a cost of £1500 (so for 4 LPAs).

However you do not need expert advice to set up an LPA, it is just an admin job .
A caveat to that would be if the donor already has some cognitive issues, but still with some understanding.
In this case a solicitor can be useful in making sure they do understand what they are doing, and are not being coerced. This would help in case of any future objections from other family members.
I believe in Scotland a solicitor has to be involved due to this reason.2 -
I'm sure all this discussion is about England and Wales, but it is important to note that Scotland is different for POA and it is more difficult (not impossible) to do it yourself.2

If doing it online, an important thing to be aware of is the need for signatures to be done in a particular order.0

Small amendment. The signatures are done off line, so .....Yorkie1 said:If doing it online, an important thing to be aware of is the need for signatures to be seen to be done in a particular order.1
