Buying a refurbished phone

if you are buying a refurb from a Network, an MVNO, an Apple device from Apple an Apple Authorised Reseller or any device from Currys /Carphone Warehouse you have little to worry about as these are likely returns / open box stock or may have had software issues or an easily resolved DOA issue when originally dispatched so where swapped out for new units and then went through an OEM approved repair centre. they are generally current models and not that old
some of the rmearketers selling older phones as refurbs you run the risk of running an older phone in that the batteries may being to lose efficiency, the OS no longer gets feature updeates and eventually no longer gets security updates thus certian apps refuse to run

I don't know about Android phones but iPhones can be bought from Apple's refurbished store. Of course these will be fairly recent models, and therefore pricey, but still a fair bit cheaper than new.
