I think some Natwest accounts have breakdown too, might be worth checking there if there is something you already have or something you an upgrade to and get other benefits too.
Also I have just had to renew my car insurance and most of the quote systems would add breakdown for cheaper than your previous price ... depending how far off insurance renewals you are.

I can remember when the AA increased their annual subscription by 50%! It was about 1966 and went from £2.10p pa to £3.15p pa. So my father switched to the RAC who were still charging £2.10p pa.

1966 would have been shillings. Decimalisation was 1971.

Alternatively bank account with Nationwide gets RAC cover for £18 a month if you want to stay with RAC
    ...AA...

And EXCELLENT cover it is, too. I couldn't buy the cover they give (and I need) direct for any money... Full Euro cover for a 20+yo campervan plus assorted other older cars. AND full global travel and mobile phone insurance. It's a total bargain.

AA, RAC are the only breakdown services with significant own fleets, but they do also use the same contractor network as everybody else. GF have a far smaller own fleet.
I bank with Nationwide already so I will look into this Thank you- Would they cover the 2 cars and 2 drivers on one account as hubby banks with some one else ?

It's personal cover for the account holder/s.

My account is a joint account for me and my partner, so we both have the same cover for that one fee.
If yours is a sole account, then only you will be covered.

It likely would have been two guineas back then.  A guinea was a pound and a shilling, which works out to £2.10.

Or it could have been £2 10s, or £2.50 in decimal (works out to £41 now, they quoted me £80 at renewal this year...)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Thank you for renewing your breakdown cover with CompareBreakdownCover.co.uk.

Following on from our renewal notification, we have collected your premium due of £54.98 and your policy has renewed for the upcoming year.

I have not needed to call them out for years.

If you make it a joint account then you'll both be covered. You don't both need to actually use the account. However if you are the owner of the vehicles then they're covered regardless of who is driving.

    • personal cover – FlexPlus account holders are covered in any eligible vehicle they're travelling in, whether as a driver or passenger; and
    • vehicle cover – all eligible vehicles you own are covered, even if you're not travelling in them.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I purposely gave the figures in decimal as there would be quite a few posters unfamiliar with pre decimal currency (probably those under 60 years old as decimal has been around for 55 years). Further the actual prices at the time were 2 Guineas and 3 Guineas!
