RAC Breakdown cover massive increase confusion

We have joint at home and national breakdown cover for 2 people and 2 cars . Today we had a renewal notice and it has gone up from £27 per month to £56 !! so over £600 a year !!!
I called them out last month due to a blow out where they changed the wheel and put the space saver on but that's all.  How can it increase that much?
I have just done a quote with green flag who have quoted a one off £89 for a years cover. It looks the same cover - 2 cars -2 drivers- at home recovery and onwards travel.
Have I made a mistake with the quote as I can't believe the difference.????? Are Green flag OK ?

Alternatively bank account with Nationwide gets RAC cover for £18 a month if you want to stay with RAC
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I’ve had Green Flag for a few years.  I’ve had to call them out a couple of times and never had an issue.  I think they often sub contract out to local companies but with RAC they tend to have their own vans and crews.

Depends where you are in the country.  Up in the North of England / Southern Scotland RAC vans are a rare sight and unless you want to wait a day (!) you'll take them up on their offer of having a sub-contractor out... ;)

    ...AA...

And EXCELLENT cover it is, too. I couldn't buy the cover they give (and I need) direct for any money... Full Euro cover for a 20+yo campervan plus assorted other older cars. AND full global travel and mobile phone insurance. It's a total bargain.

AA, RAC are the only breakdown services with significant own fleets, but they do also use the same contractor network as everybody else. GF have a far smaller own fleet.

£27 a month was still more than you needed to pay.

With breakdown cover, shop around every year. Loyalty is rarely rewarded.

Nothing wrong with Green Flag, we had an issue with one of our cars on the driveway, phoned GF and they had a mechanic with us in a couple of hours.
RAC and AA are incredibly expensive...

I would echo the above - just like Insurance you're going to get higher increases in the hope that you'll not bother shopping around and just pay them the extra.  I was with StartRescue for many years and they were really cheap (about £45 for the year I think, but that was only me and 1 car).  When I did have to call them out, they send out a local recovery truck to take you home or to a garage, but that was fine with me.

I've had the same with the RAC where they'd put the renewal up a fair bit each year then I'd phone them and get it back down again.  They massively increased the renewal one year which was a good bit more than usual and that same year I'd actually needed the RAC but they'd been no use simply telling me they might respond within six hours so I cancelled with them.

Unfortunately as others have mentioned these days companies take advantage of customer loyalty rather than reward it.
