I started down the thermal route with a couple of pairs of long johns DH brought back from Finland - they were excellent! And inherited a silk pair from my Dad, which were good while they lasted.

I've had a couple of pairs from Mountain Warehouse for I don't know how many years and they still seem to do the job, plus a PepCo pair bought when I went oop north for a weekend without properly preparing, also got a nice vest from Sainsburys which said it was thermal.

For walking, I have a pair of lined winter trousers, and I haven't needed to put long johns underneath so far this year, even though it's been chilly ...

But I'm not usually outdoors for any length of time, except when I'm walking.

Indoors, it's my top half which gets cold and I swear by a gilet: I wear a thin cotton top under a shirt, put the gilet on and I'm usually toasty. I'm considering putting a cardigan on soon, because it is a bit chilly just sitting around.

Signature removed for peace of mind

I will order some; my thoughts from wearing my running tights with a drawstring, that they would fall down if not fastened.
I have now worn them unfastened and all was ok. They also have feet straps. I just need to try some, thanks for the replies.

I was in Lidl yesterday and noticed they have thermal underwear in the Middle at the moment, in men and women's styles.

Primark also had some recently, as well as Aldi and Lidl.

Suspect most hiking shops also will have "base layers".

I wear cheap thermals and when it's bad some fleecy lined leggings or tights, have a pair of each.
