Does anybody know how to make calls from spain to Africa without using WhatsApp.
This is a query for my parents. At the moment they go to spain, buy a lyca SIM in Spain and top it up.I
Im thinking there must be a cheaper way as can be spending up to £100 over 5 weeks.
Possibly getting a contract would work out cheaper even if they don't use it for a full year?
Any suggestions will be helpful, thank you in advance

Because the question isn’t very specific, there isn’t one guaranteed cheapest answer that works for everyone.

One option you *could* try is a UK Three SIM, as Three works in Spain and allows roaming there on many plans. In theory, you’d be able to use your minutes while in Spain, but the important bit is that international calls made *while roaming* aren’t always treated the same as calls made from the UK. Calls from Spain to Africa may still be charged separately, depending on the tariff.

If you go down this route, I’d strongly suggest testing it first with a PAYG Three SIM before committing to a longer plan — make a short international call and check the actual charge. That way you’ll know for sure whether it works out cheaper in practice.

If the calls are going to be regular or long, a local Spanish SIM or a dedicated international calling SIM may still work out cheaper overall, but for occasional use, trying Three could be worth a look.

Have you looked at Rebtel? It's an app which allows you to make cheap international calls

I use Facetime to ring Australia from UK every day. The person and I both have IPhones and it costs zero. We are often on for an hour every day.

Africa is a continent, are they calling people in every country in Africa or some specific ones?

Will they only be calling Africa or other places too? How many minutes are we talking? Is it many different people or just a relative?

VOIP can be an effective way to do international calls. Where you are based in the world is irrelevant as the call is done via the internet until it gets to the host country of the person you are calling however which country the service is based in can make a difference if they want to be calling people in Spain via it too

Is the "without using WhatsApp" requirement specific to WhatsApp or are you ruling out all app-based options and require conventional telephony?
There are loads of app-based alternatives to WhatsApp  Signal, Telegram, Zoom, Teams etc.
If you need it to be a telephone call (eg. the folk in Ghana need to use a phone line) then a VoIP service like voipcheap might be an option:
There are other VoIP providers, so compare prices befre picking one.
