One of the things that hit home with me on reading Wuthering Heights was just how well global supply routes were established in the late 18th century, as evidenced by the availability of oranges in rural Yorkshire. Quite why I was surprised is a mystery given that Nell Gwynne was selling them in the West End of London a hundred years prior…

The usual perambulation around Thirsk today and struck gold in the very first chazza…the BHF shop. Found an, as new, Seasalt, water and windproof parka stylee coat, (style called Plant Hunter of all things) for £15, original price was an eye-watering £175. It is actually a steel grey colour not as bluey as the pic. Dunno if I’m imagining it but I feel I often pick up real bargains in either the first or the last chazza shop I go into 🤨
Kept an eye open for Persephones but none to be found…by the way, are they usually paperbacks or hardbacks? Had a squiz on a certain website but couldn’t tell!

Very pleased to have found a stash of handmade earrings for £2 a pair of the type you normally find for a pretty at posh craft fairs. A bit of investigation later and I suspect the maker (who is local) was donating the remains of her old stock as she’s now focussing on a different product. Several pairs snapped up which will be birthday pressies and stocking fillers. I kept a couple of pairs for me too.

@Miró - that coat is a great find, well done you. Persephone only produce paperbacks which does cut down the shelves you need to run your eyes over somewhat. Best wishes to Daphne and her current amour.
I was in Summertown this Friday and called into the Oxfam and Scope shops. The Helen and Douglas House shop is being refurbished and the sign on the door said that they would be having a grand reopening in March but I stupidly didn't make a note of when so I'll give them a ring sometime to see.
Anyway in the Scope shop I snapped up another of the British Library Crime Classics for £1. Then in the Oxfam shop I found this lovely plastic egg box which is exactly like one I remember from the 1960s and 70s so I gladly paid £2.99 which I thought was a bargain. I also grabbed this unused Address book for a friend who never can remember where she's written anyone's phone number down and a dvd of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Then I spotted a Pullman bread tin and despite never having heard of the brand stamped on it decided to risk it, after all £4.99 isn't too much to lose. Now that I've looked them up it turns out it's an American brand and this tin costs $35.99.
Then, this afternoon, I dropped into my favourite bhf shop and snapped up this Garrison Keillor which I've never seen on the shelves at the library and a very grubby and splattered Practical Cookery which were both £2.
I also bought these earrings because they were such a nice, rich, gold colour, they were £4. The pencil is for scale.

I meant to say that I know it's a funny time to post. I couldn't get off to sleep so decided to get up and take the opportunity to get on with things while it's quiet.

Shame about the labels stuck on the lovely book fronts.X

I'd be reaching for the isopropyl alcohol, but then the house holds some slightly deranged chemistry - research historians do a lot of cleaning things (and I mostly clean plates, Youngest observes.)

@goldfinches - I find a wipe down with a dampened and slightly soaped kitchen towel and a bit of elbow grease shifts the most stubborn of unwanted additions to second hand books. I'm interested as to how often you use the Ottolenghi? (The prices of his cheffy jar range in Waitrose come in at higher than most of my individual chazzer purchases).

@Rosa_Damascena is that last thingumidoo a bread dough scorer?

It turns out it is - but I bought it under the misapprehension it was to core carrots as in this viseo I watched the other day. Watch the Palestinian recipe from 18:15 :
Not sure what I would stuff them with though as I don't eat meat. Possibly bubble & speak / roast veg leftovers?
