A little help for unusually mounting a security light?

discard the 'optional' bit and mount the light so that so that the hinge is vertical rather than horizontal
(screw holes on a vertical line, rather than the horizonal line you have assumed)
Then you can swing it left and right as you see fit

So from what I can see, that piece in my hand looks like it might be optional. The light unit fits inside that groove. 




I say optional because the light unit itself also has screw holes which can't be used if it's in the longer mount in picture 1. 

Red button is on-off.

And as you can see, the light only tilts up or down.

I can't say I follow what that top-pic bracket is or how it fits. 

So, you obviously want a downwards-tilting angle such as the bracket does provide, but also something of a sideways angle?

How much of a sideways angle are you after? The simplest method would be, I guess, to fit that bracket as it should be, with two screws, adjust the tilt angle to what you want, then slacken the screws, in particular the one away from the side angle, prise the bracket away sideways, measure the gap behind it that will be required to be filled to achieve the side tilt, and slips the right number of washers behind that screw. Add or remove as required for preferred angle. It'll hardly be noticeable when fitted.
