New tyres but different speed ratings

Hi all

I recently had 2 new tyres fitted (recently purchased second hand car) and noticed today the speed ratings are different on the new tyres

My owners manual states the tyre should be a 215/55 R17 but the garage fitted 215/55 ZR17.

My primary concern if safety as I now have 3 ZR tyres and 1 R (front nearside)  (so it had a mix before!!!) I am searching online and read mixed messages.
Also is this likely to fail an MOT.

Would be grateful for any advice please...car is a Nissan Juke 1.2 (2015)

Many thanks for any advice and for your time reading this.

Regards

Tiggy

  • Are you sure the width is 255?

It sounds too wide so I looked it up, they should be 215/55 R17

Unless it is some special model?

It won't fail an MOT, that only considers sizes.

Most tyre failures are due to neglect, foreign body or impact, rather than the construction.  Keep them inflated correctly, check for screws etc and on a 1.2 Nissan it is nothing to worry about as I doubt you will be reaching150mph.

I would check the age of a ZR rated tyre.
  • Its not a fail. It would need to be a different size or different construction (ie mixing crossply and radial) on an axle, to fail. Its probably not recommended deep down somewhere in the manufacturer's recommendations, but this is another matter.

With it being a Nissan Juke, you have more serious concerns than the tyres!

Do the front fog lights work!

Most of them seem to need them on at all times!

Especially if its a CVT auto.

There won't be a tyre that is JUST R.

Look further on the sidewall markings. The speed and load ratings may well be separate - so something like 92W

A speed rating that's above the minimum required for the car is not an issue.

    Hi all

Thanks for all the various helpful comments.

Based on the various posts I have looked again and now think I have found the correct speed rating for each tyre which I don't think I fully understood in my opening post

So driver side Rear is 94 W and front is 94 W
Near side is Rear is 98 W and front is 98 V

Also attached the sticker from into the car door.

My mind is so confused any further advice (on the mix) would be gratefully received.

    Thank you.

  • That sticker says that 215/55 17 tyres with at least 94 load rating (670kg per tyre) and at least V (149mph) or W (168mph) speed rating are the original spec, 2.5 bar pressure in the front, 2.2 bar in the rear.

    215mm tread width
    55% of 215mm sidewall height
    17" rim diameter

    You have 2 x 94W, 1 x 98W, 1 x 98V. All are perfectly adequate and appropriate.
The 98s will be a little harsher ride, being XL rated for heavier loads (750kg/tyre).
The speed rating is irrelevant, since I doubt your Up! is capable of anything remotely close to 149mph...

BTW, your Up! probably weighs around a ton empty, with 1300kg maximum laden weight - so even 94-rated 670kg/tyre is way higher than is ever going to be an issue...
