Travel insurance query...

We currently have an Annual policy which expires January 2026.
We have almost completed booking all steps - flights, hotels, transfers etc - for a trip that starts AFTER our current travel insurance expires. If we buy a new policy - Annual or single trip (Annual is now prohibitively expensive, with pre-existing conditions/disability!) - which commences the day our current policy expires, which policy would cover us if we had to make a claim, e.g. cancellation, either before the current policy expires even though the trip starts after, or after it expires but for a trip that was booked before the new policy started? TIA

If you went for a single trip policy, I think it would be better/safer to start that policy immediately and forget the annual which is close to expiry. If you go for an annual, make sure you renew before the Jan expiry date. I have just had a renewal quote and it tells me to renew before the expiry to ensure continuous cover.

    That makes sense, thanks.

You might want to speak to your insurer.

I have annual travel insurance that renews automatically unless I cancel.
They told me that their cover would cover a trip that ends after the current policy ends as long as I let it renew.
This may have changed and not all insurers are the same, but might be worth asking them as you might get cover if you renew.

We have a similar situation.  My husband and I have separate annual travel policies.  His expires 31/1/26 and is due to auto renew with Staysure.  It’s gone up quite a bit this year although nothing has changed with his pre existing conditions (all declared) except he’s a year older.

We have a number of trips already booked for next year and the first one commences 21 January.  If we shop around for a cheaper policy and need to cancel who covers us?  Staysure or the new insurer?

Sorry, typo in my post.  His policy expires 31 December 2025.

Is it a viable option to renew the annual policy with the current insurer?  It would not then matter whether the claim is dealt with by the 2025 or 2026 policy.

OR, just get a single trip policy starting immediately.

I would have thought that simply the limited time between now and the current policy expiring means an event arising in that period is unlikely in any case.
