Which law do you contend they're breaking?
I can identify a few possibilites but I am not going to do so in an open forum.

Before I went professional as a sports trader/punter I was an academic lawyer and consultant; criminal law was one of my areas of interest. I am pretty confident on that aspect of the current situation.
Even if it is a criminal offence, how does that help you? Are you planning to get the police involved?

Then !!!!!! are you posting on an internet forum asking for help from (probably) unqualified anonymous people?

Go to the most appropriate academic lawyer with the most relevant expertise in this area that you surely must know with your background.

    Or don't you know any?

    (Schools anyone?)

    Then why did you post

” It surely cannot be legal for Betfair to deny me access to my monies and I can only conclude there must be some major mistake. But as no one will speak with me I do not know what to do.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated”?
  • Course you were.
    Yes, I was.

In days of yore there was a subforum on here entitled "Gambling Introductory Loopholes" to which I was a fairly prolific contributor. A lot of legal issues used to arise over bets and it was mostly myself who used to advise forumites of what to do against bookmakers to make them e.g. honour bets which they had tried to get out of. I would do so in the forum and also by PM if requested. One notable situation when a major issue arose was when one online bookmaker tried to cancel the bets of numerous customers when it realised it had bitten off more than it could chew. The legal position was pretty straightforward but that didn't stop some contributors (possibly representatives of the bookmakers) from saying that nothing would happen and we punters had no chance. How wrong they were. It was quite amusing to see them trying to argue law when clearly the did not have a clue, or where simply being bloodyminded.  There was considerable brinkmanship on the part of the bookmakers and court proceedings had to be instigated, but as soon as they were and the bookie handed matters over to its legal team they buckled and the issues were all resolved successfully. I don't know if it is possible to retrieve the subforum from an archive but there is a very long thread on this affair somewhere in cyberspace.

OK, but your previous comment on the subject didn't exactly exude confidence:
It surely cannot be legal for Betfair to deny me access to my monies...
Fair point, but I was interested in finding out if anyone had any ideas about what might be occurring and sometimes it pays to feign innocence; but, any smart lawyer knows the answer to a legal question when he asks it!

I don't want to get involved in a legal debate on here because I know from previous numerous experiences (see my previous post above) how a discussion is likely to go. Edited to add. As some of the above posts have shown!

I do of course appreciate people taking time to respond so far and will update the thread when there is something to report.

    What was the outcome
  • There are a whole bunch of reason that they can suspend and/or close your account, it may even appear closed when it is suspended.

The regulations on bookmakers/gambling sites around AML are quite strict, they are also not allowed to tell you what the reason is whilst they investigate (the same as banks). This could have been triggered by something you did, but equally our account could have been compromised which also lead to an issue. They can also end their business relationship with you at any point and they often do, I have never known a successful gambler not have their accounts closed and be banned, the most successful gambler I know is banned from every bookie, online, high street and trackside in the country because he made so much money out of them.

My advice would be to submit a formal complaint and then wait, it could easily be 8-12 weeks. During that period I would also advise you to not throw around potentially libellous comments that you believe their behaviour is criminal or corrupt, which if you were a lawyer you would already fully understand the implications of.

All the monies were successfully released when the card provider realised there was nothing untoward whatsoever. I didn't realise I hadn't updated that old thread when the matter was resolved. Mea culpa.
